Metal braces may seem like they’re just your average orthodontic equipment, but you probably didn’t know that they’ve got a few impressive secrets that make them cooler than you think! Before you judge your wires and brackets for being average, keep reading to find out why they’re anything but!
Space Case
Did you know that the nickel titanium used in most braces wire was originally created for NASA to use in the space program? They were developed with shape memory properties that are meant to activate with body heat and/or pressure. Maybe that’s why they are so effective at “spacing” your teeth out!
Origin Story
While your braces may be new to you, the first braces were actually designed way back in 1728 by a man named Pierre Fauchard. They were comprised of a flat piece of metal that was connected to the teeth by pieces of thread. The brackets came much later. They weren’t invented until 1915!
No Tricks, Just Treatment
Don’t worry about the cement your orthodontist uses to attach your brackets to your teeth. Not only will it not harm them, but some varieties also actually contain a fluoride releasing treatment that helps keep them healthy and strong.
Metal Matters
While your braces are made of metal, thankfully they’re not magnetic, and they definitely won’t set off any metal detectors. They also won’t pick up radio transmissions, nor will they increase your risk of being struck by lightning or attract fish if you smile under water!
Orthodontists vs. Dentists
Did you know that every orthodontist is a dentist, but not every dentist is an orthodontist? In order to become an orthodontist, you first need to graduate from dental school, and then attend a postgraduate orthodontics program for two to three years after that. In fact, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, a mere six percent of American dentists are also Orthodontists!
